Since 2018 the IASC Principals have introduced the ‘IASC Humanitarian System – Wide Scale Up’ defined when exceptional measures are undertaken to respond to an emergency within a time bound period (up to 6 months). This designation replaces the previously used L3 emergency classification. Further details here.
System-Wide Scale-Up Activations have notable implications for the food security cluster/sector teams, as they come with benchmarks to be achieved, increased scrutiny over the response, and hence increased demand for information and reporting – leading to augmented workload for the IM staff.
