7.2. 5W training and guidance

Prev Next

Training on the 5Ws should be done periodically to ensure partners are familiarised with the process and to ensure that new personal/ staff are aware of the 5Ws. These periodic trainings can be held in person or remotely. The trainings also enable partners to provide inputs on the 5Ws and raise challenges they face with reporting. As IMO it is important you are aware of any issues facing the partners as this will affect how one interprets the data provided.

During a response, changes to reporting may be required in order to capture specific information (e.g., a new Flash Appeal); such a situation requires immediate training on the 5Ws to all partners. It is the IMOs role to ensure that partners can report accurately.

Besides training, guidance notes on 5Ws can help partners more accurately report, and can be accompanied alongside in-person / online sessions. FSC South Sudan, FSC Cox Bazar and FSC DRC have developed such guidance notes.

Another option is to develop video guidance on 5Ws reporting, as undertaken by FSC DRC.

In some cases, the 5Ws template includes a Read Me tab detailing how to fill in the 5Ws. See examples here

When sharing the 5Ws with partners via email, some FSC country responses provide clear guidance on the 5Ws process and on specific important fields that require special attention.
